Should you buy your own spray drone, or hire an operator?

Spray drones have got cheaper and better fast, and plenty of farmers are asking the same question: do I buy my own, or pay a professional? Here's an honest way to think about it.

The sticker price is the smallest cost

The drone is the easy part. Running one properly means factoring in the true cost of ownership:

• Insurance — appropriate cover for aerial chemical application.
• Training and currency — learning to actually get a result, not just fly it.
• Maintenance — these are serious machines that need looking after.
• Testing gear — water-sensitive paper, an app, a weather meter, and the time to pattern-test each job.
• Chemical compliance and record-keeping — the paperwork is a legal requirement, not an optional extra.
• Parts after a crash — and honestly, every farmer I know has put one in. Parts aren't cheap.

None of that is a reason not to buy one. It's just the real picture behind "I'll just get my own."

Treat it like an aircraft, not a toy

The thing that really decides whether owning one pays off is your attitude to it. Treat it like the real aircraft it is, with the respect that deserves, and it can be a genuinely great tool to own. Treat it like a toy — as plenty of people still do — and it gets expensive the day it ends up in a tree.

Then there's the red tape

A spray drone comes with compliance on two sides — the aviation rules (CASA) and your state's chemical-use rules — and exactly what applies depends on the machine, how and where you're using it, and which state you're in. The rules also keep changing. Before you buy, check the current CASA requirements for your specific drone and your state's chemical-application rules — don't just go off what your mate did last season.

When owning makes sense

If you've got the area, you spray it often, and you'll treat it seriously — the aircraft, the testing, the chemical compliance — owning can pay off. You've got it on hand when the timing's right, and with pests like armyworm the timing is everything.

When hiring wins

For occasional or seasonal work, hiring a professional is usually cheaper and simpler. You get the machine, the currency, the insurance, the pattern-testing and the record-keeping without carrying any of it — and someone whose whole job is getting the application right the first time.

The real question isn't the drone

It's whether the application is done correctly and responsibly. Coverage, weather, droplet size, label compliance and proper records are what separate a good result from a wasted spray. If you're not going to do all of that yourself, that's exactly what you're paying a good operator for.
